This is an informative and factual post on the film Johnny English. There's a little trivia about John Malkovich and it talks about the story of the movie. Brief Summary: In 2003, Rowan Atkinson released Johnny English as a spoof spy movie of James Bond films. This was the first time he portrayed his character from Blackadder II, which he called "a rather disgusting and uncouth man by all accounts". The film grossed $44 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics. Trivia: John Malkovich had originally been approached to portray Dr Evil in Austin Powers but they could not work out contract negotiations with him. He was then offered a role in this movie as Mr Ambrose (the boss). He had starred in another one of Atkinson's spin-off movies with Mr. Bean, titled "Mr. Bean's Holiday", which was released in 2000. Summary: A brief review on the film by the reviewer The good: The movie is quite enjoyable and I have to give it credit for being a spoof on all spy movies, since it takes itself very seriously for most of its duration (although towards the end there seems to be some obvious mocking at the genre). The actors clearly enjoy their parts; Rowan Atkinson does his usual stellar job of playing Johnny English, but I am more impressed by Molina as Mrs. Barnaby, who is a wonderful presence in the movie. The supporting cast is also excellent, especially John Malkovich as Mr. Ambrose. He's a great actor, and his facial expressions in the movie are perfectly timed and hilarious. The bad: Despite its good comedy, there are a couple of minor things that I couldn't help but notice about the movie; one similarity to other spoof movies (such as Austin Powers), is that it relies heavily on jokes that are already well-known to regular viewers of spy movies (e.g., "Who's Johnny English?", "Itchy & Scratchy", "Wallace & Gromit", etc). Another issue is that I felt this movie might have benefited from having more funny moments instead of relying on the action to be funny. I would have liked to see some additional funny gags or just more comedy (although, as mentioned above, there are times when it is genuinely funny). Overall: Johnny English is not the best movie in the world, but it does offer an entertaining adventure for action/spy/parody fans. The following code notes are taken from the DVD. "Johnny English" 1.
